Love can be blind, but don't let it empty your bank account. Spotting romance scammers online.

Romance scams occur when a criminal adopts a fake online identity to gain a victim's affection and trust, eventually asking for money.

How It Works

The scammer builds a relationship over weeks or months. Suddenly, a 'crisis' occurs—medical emergency, lost passport, or customs fee—and they need money urgently.

Warning Signs

- They profess love very quickly.
- They refuse to meet in person or video call (often claiming bad connection).
- They try to move the conversation off the dating site immediately.
- They ask for money via wire transfer or gift cards.
